The Tien Shan brown bear is listed in the Red Book of Uzbekistan and included in Appendix I of CITES. It is considered a vulnerable subspecies with a wide but fragmented range. It occurs in the Western Tien Shan and the western part of the Pamir-Alai, inhabiting middle- and high-mountain zones at elevations of 1,500–3,500 metres above sea level, including mountain forests, open woodlands and subalpine and alpine meadows.
The brown bear is active from March to October, primarily during morning and evening hours. In winter, it retreats to dens, where it hibernates. It breeds once every two years, typically in January–February. Its diet consists of fruits, roots, and occasionally mammals, insects and carrion. Its lifespan can reach up to 30 years.
For reference, Yukori Tupalang National Nature Park was established on 4 March 2022 in Sariosiyo district of Surkhandarya region. The park is home to around 100 species of vertebrates, including more than 10 species of mammals, about 20 species of birds, over 10 species of reptiles, as well as amphibians and aquatic organisms.
A total of 9 mammal species, 9 bird species, 2 reptile species, 2 fish species, and 6 invertebrate species found in the park are listed in the Red Book of Uzbekistan.
