The Turkestan lynx is listed in the Red Book of Uzbekistan and in Appendix II of CITES as a vulnerable, declining and patchily distributed subspecies. It inhabits the middle and upper mountain zones, most commonly in rocky and rugged terrain. The species is predominantly nocturnal, although it may also be active during the daytime. In conditions of food scarcity, it is capable of relocating. Its lifespan can reach up to 17 years and its diet consists primarily of hares. According to the results of the autumn 2025 survey, a total of 230 Turkestan lynx individuals were recorded in the Gissar Reserve.
For reference: the Gissar State Nature Reserve was established in 1983. It is located in the southern part of the Gissar Range within the territory of Kashkadarya Region, at elevations ranging from 1,750 to 4,349 meters above sea level.
The reserve borders Surkhandarya Region to the southeast and Tajikistan to the north. A total of 276 species of invertebrates (insects) and vertebrate animals have been recorded within its territory , of which 8 species are included in the Red Book of Uzbekistan.
