In support of the Aral Sea: the annual Aral Sea Eco Marathon attracts international attention

In Karakalpakstan, the Aral Sea Eco-Marathon was held by initiative of minister of ecology Aziz Abdukhakimov on the drained bottom of the Aral Sea, dedicated to World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought.
12 athletes from Kenya, Togo, France, China, Japan, Pakistan, the Philippines, and Uzbekistan took part in the 42 km, 195 m marathon. Alimardon Sabirov, Denis Mambetov, Nurbek Khusanov, Andrey Kulikov participated from Uzbekistan.
The purpose of the event is to draw global attention to the environmental disaster of the Aral Sea and the need for reasonable use of water resources.
The athletes who ran the distance with a score of 4:43:23 and above noted how great the tragedy of the Aral region is and called on the world community to make rational use of water resources.
