The initiative addresses one of the most pressing challenges in biodiversity conservation—the illegal and unsustainable take of migratory species, primarily driven by domestic use, including hunting, trapping and local trade. According to the CMS Convention, this factor poses a serious threat to a significant number of species listed in its Appendices.
The GTI is being implemented under the CMS framework and предусматривает a comprehensive approach, including strengthening legislation, enhancing monitoring systems, engaging local communities and raising awareness. The Republic of Uzbekistan supported the launch of the initiative and has joined the group of countries participating in its implementation.
During the event, the Uzbek side highlighted the urgency of addressing illegal take and emphasized the need to strengthen international cooperation. It was noted that migratory species such as the saiga antelope, goitered gazelle, kulan and snow leopard inhabit the territory of Uzbekistan and their conservation requires coordinated action at both national and transboundary levels.
Particular attention was also given to ongoing efforts to strengthen liability for violations related to wildlife protection. Uzbekistan reaffirmed its readiness to engage in practical cooperation with international partners and to further develop regional collaboration in Central Asia in this area.
