Siberian ibex inhabit hard-to-reach elevations ranging from 2,000 to 5,000 metres above sea level, favouring steep slopes, rocky terrain and alpine meadows. They feed on grasses, shrubs and tree buds. In winter, during periods of heavy snowfall, they descend to lower slopes in search of food. They reproduce once or twice a year. Their average lifespan is 15–17 years.
For reference: the Chatkal State Biosphere Reserve was established in December 1947. It is located in the picturesque western part of the Tien Shan Mountains, on the Chatkal Range, at elevations from 1,100 to 3,890 metres above sea level and covers an area of 24,706 hectares.
Approximately 1,300 species of vertebrate and invertebrate animals are found within the reserve. Among the mammals are the Siberian ibex, the Tien Shan brown bear (white-clawed subspecies), Menzbier’s marmot, lynx, wolf, snow leopard and others. Of these, 20 species are listed in the Red Book of the Republic of Uzbekistan and two species—the snow leopard and Menzbier’s marmot—are included in the International Red List.
