The seminar brought together representatives of several government agencies, including the National Committee on Ecology and Climate Change, the Central Asian University of Environmental and Climate Change Studies (Green University), the State Customs Committee under the Ministry of Economy and Finance, the Border Troops of the State Security Service, the Prosecutor General’s Office, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, as well as INTERPOL and the environmental police.
The event was opened by the Rector of Green University, Bakhtiyor Pulatov. In his remarks, he proposed exploring the possibility of establishing a specialized educational programme at the university to train professionals in combating illegal wildlife trade. It is envisaged that students would undertake internships with customs and border authorities and receive relevant certificates upon completion of their studies.
During the seminar, representatives of TRAFFIC presented new initiatives of the organization in Central Asia aimed at strengthening the capacities of law enforcement and administrative authorities responsible for implementing the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). It was noted that these projects focus on enhancing the qualifications of specialists and improving mechanisms for combating illegal wildlife trade.
Participants also paid particular attention to analysing existing practices related to the collection, exchange, and management of data on illegal wildlife trade. The discussions identified key gaps in this area and outlined possible ways to improve information-sharing mechanisms and coordination among relevant agencies.
As part of the seminar, discussions were also held in a focus group format. Participants reviewed the current status of efforts to combat illegal wildlife trade, identified key challenges and enforcement needs and exchanged best practices and proposals for further strengthening cooperation.
It was emphasized that events of this kind contribute to strengthening interagency cooperation, enhancing the professional capacities of specialists and reinforcing measures to protect biodiversity and combat illegal wildlife trade in Central Asia.
