In this new episode, journalist and presenter Michaela Strachan travels to remote mountain regions of Uzbekistan to trace the path of the elusive snow leopard. Together with inspectors of the Hissar State Nature Reserve, she installs camera traps and collects critical data to support the conservation of this rare predator. The film highlights real, on-the-ground biodiversity conservation work, the challenges of expeditions into hard-to-reach areas and the people who work every day to protect wildlife.
The premiere will take place on 28 February, and the documentary will also be available on BBC iPlayer. The film underscores the importance of conserving the snow leopard — a symbol of the mountain ecosystems of Central Asia.
For reference: the snow leopard , classified as an endangered and locally distributed species, is listed in the Red Book of Uzbekistan, the IUCN Red List, and CITES Appendix I. It inhabits the middle and upper mountain belts at elevations of 2,100–4,500 meters above sea level. It is predominantly nocturnal and constantly moves up and down steep mountain slopes. The species’ lifespan reaches up to 21 years.
