The Long-legged Buzzard belongs to the hawk family (Accipitridae) and is one of the most widespread raptors in Central Asia. Its plumage typically ranges from brown and dark brown to yellowish hues, with comparatively lighter wings being a distinguishing feature. The species is largely sedentary and nests in steppe, semi-desert, and desert zones. It lays eggs in late March or April, producing between two and five chicks. The species is also found in mountainous areas, plainsand agricultural landscapes.
The Long-legged Buzzard feeds primarily on ground squirrels, gerbils, voles and other rodents, as well as hedgehogs, small birds, tortoises, lizards and snakes. It plays a significant role in maintaining ecological balance.
For reference: Zarafshan National Park was established in 2018. It is located in the Jambay and Bulungur districts of the Samarkand region, on the right bank of the Zarafshan River. The park is home to 21 species of fish (three of which are listed in the Red Book of Uzbekistan), 13 species of reptiles (five listed in the Red Book), 243 species of birds (32 listed in the Red Book) and 25 species of mammals (four listed in the Red Book).
