The hangul, an endangered and locally distributed subspecies, is listed in the Red Book of Uzbekistan and included in Appendix II of the CITES Convention. It is also covered by the Bonn Convention as a transboundary migratory species. The deer inhabits floodplain tugai forests and occasionally adjacent sandy deserts. Seasonal movements from mountain river valleys toward foothill areas have also been observed.
