Wetlands play a vital role in maintaining ecological balance: they regulate water regimes, reduce the risks of floods and droughts, purify water, provide habitats for a wide range of plant and animal species and contribute to resilience to climate change.
Uzbekistan acceded to the Ramsar Convention in 2001. To date, five sites from Uzbekistan have been included in the List of Wetlands of International Importance (Ramsar Sites): Lake Dengizkul (2001), the Aydar–Arnasay Lake System(2008), the Tudakul and Kuymazar Reservoirs (2020), Lake Sudochie (2023) and Zhyltyrbas Lake (2024). These areas are of particular importance for the conservation of rare species of flora and fauna, the maintenance of water balance and the sustainable use of natural resources.
