Population of Rare Wildlife Increasing in the Surkhan State Nature Reserve

It is noteworthy that the reserve is recording a steady increase in wildlife populations. In particular, according to the results of the spring 2024 census, the number of markhor reached 805 individuals, while the population of Bukhara mountain sheep stood at 119. The autumn census of the same year showed a further increase, with the markhor population rising to 812 individuals and Bukhara mountain sheep to 120.
Further monitoring established that in spring 2025 the markhor population increased to 893 individuals, and by autumn it had reached 981. The number of Bukhara mountain sheep amounted to 129 individuals in spring and 137 in autumn.
For reference: the markhor, as a locally distributed subspecies facing the threat of extinction, is listed in the Red Book of Uzbekistan, the IUCN Red List and Appendix I of the CITES Convention.
