During the meeting, information was presented on the results achieved under the Aral Sea Wetlands project, which was implemented in the Republic of Karakalpakstan and Bukhara region—areas most vulnerable to land degradation and the loss of aquatic ecosystems. The project has proven to be an effective platform for supporting protected natural areas and local communities through a combination of practical interventions, institutional development, and capacity building.
Among the key results highlighted were:
– improved access to water resources for wildlife, including through the drilling and equipping of wells in the "Saiga" Wildlife Sanctuary;
– strengthening of the material and technical base of the "South Ustyurt" and "Central Kyzylkum" National Nature Parks;
– assessment of the management effectiveness of specially protected natural areas, accompanied by practical recommendations for the conservation of rare and endangered species;
– implementation of land and ecosystem restoration measures, including forest reclamation and greening activities in the Muynak area;
– development of a methodology for assessing ecosystem water requirements and the delivery of training activities on water resource modeling in the Amu Darya delta.
Particular emphasis was placed on the institutional significance of establishing the Regional Committee for Integrated Territorial Planning, as well as on the approval of the buffer zone of the "Aktau–Tamdy" State Nature Sanctuary by a resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers.
Launch of the EcoLand Project and Priorities for 2026
The first meeting of the EcoLand Project Board marked an important milestone in the launch of the new project, which is financed with the support of the Global Environment Facility. Participants reviewed and approved the work plan for 2026, the institutional structure of the Project Board, the updated budget, changes to the project team, and the revised Project Results Framework.
Starting in 2026, the EcoLand project will be implemented based on four interrelated principles:
– development of science-based environmental policy;
– introduction of innovative solutions for ecosystem restoration;
– establishment of sustainable financial mechanisms;
– strengthening national systems for monitoring, training and knowledge exchange.
During the discussions, it was noted that Uzbekistan’s unique ecosystems play a critical role in ensuring public well-being and environmental resilience. At the same time, like many countries worldwide, Uzbekistan faces challenges related to land degradation, water scarcity, biodiversity loss, and the impacts of climate change. Addressing these challenges in a systematic manner is viewed as a key foundation for sustainable development and environmental security.
It was emphasized that the successful implementation of both projects depends directly on the active engagement of all stakeholders and on the contribution of international partners, first and foremost UNDP and IUCN, which bring advanced global experience and best practices. The experience gained through the Aral Sea Wetlands project will serve as a solid foundation for the effective implementation of EcoLand, enhancing investment effectiveness and strengthening cross-sectoral coordination.
At the conclusion of the meeting, participants expressed their readiness for continued close cooperation and reaffirmed their shared commitment to advancing Uzbekistan’s environmental and climate agenda at both the national and international levels.
