The event was dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the Convention’s entry into force, highlighting its significant role in global wildlife conservation efforts. The campaign became an important component of the CoP20 program and underscored the commitment of Uzbekistan and participating countries to advancing conservation initiatives and adaptation measures amid climate change.
The planting took place on a 1.5-hectare site, where tree species fully adapted to local climatic conditions were selected. In total, 60 paulownia saplings, 100 pines, 20 plane trees, 20 elms, 20 ash trees, 30 fruit trees, and 750 catalpa saplings were planted. These species were chosen for their resilience to arid climates and their ability to improve soil quality and contribute to a favorable green infrastructure in urban areas.
Organizers noted that tree-planting initiatives carried out during major international events have become a good tradition for Uzbekistan. Previously, in honor of the 80th anniversary of UNESCO, the country implemented a special “green garden” project, during which new trees were also planted.
The CITES CoP20 campaign not only symbolizes participants’ commitment to environmental sustainability goals but also makes a practical contribution to expanding green areas in the region. In the context of increasing pressure on the ecosystems of Central Asia, such initiatives demonstrate how international cooperation can support the restoration of natural resources and the creation of a green legacy for future generations.
