Discussion on the status of groundwater use and protection held at a committee of the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis

During the meeting, the results of a supervisory and analytical review of the status of groundwater use and protection were considered, based on the examples of Samarkand and Navoi regions.
It was noted that certain work is being carried out in the country to install water metering devices and to digitalise drilling equipment. At the same time, a number of issues were highlighted, including difficulties in obtaining permits for special water use for existing wells, installation of water meters, and integration of existing devices into a unified information system. It was emphasised that measures to prevent illegal drilling and the use of unregulated equipment would contribute to more efficient use of groundwater resources.
During the discussions, proposals were made to strengthen state control over groundwater use, conduct a full inventory and digitalisation of all wells, introduce the “one well — one ID” principle, accelerate the installation of water meters, and create a unified electronic database.
Measures were also identified to widely implement water-saving technologies, enhance interagency cooperation on groundwater use and protection, and improve public awareness and responsible water use practices. A corresponding decision was adopted on the agenda item.
