Yesterday, for the first time in London, a masterclass was organized by a prominent Uzbek artist and art expert.
With the support of the Embassy of Uzbekistan in London and the UK project “Maqām Beyond Nation,” a masterclass was held for the professors and students of the Music Faculty of the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) of the University of London. The masterclass was conducted by Ilyos Arabov, an associate professor at the Yunus Rajabiy Institute of Uzbek National Music Art and an Honored Artist of Uzbekistan.
This masterclass was organized for the first time in London to intensify cultural cooperation between Uzbekistan and the UK, and to promote the country's music and maqom arts more widely.
The event was attended by many representatives from academic circles, well-known art critics, professors, students, and public figures.
In addition, the foreign participants were informed about the efforts being made to develop culture and art in the republic, as well as the direction of studying the scientific and creative heritage of our ancestors. The event was held in a lively atmosphere and contributed to introducing Uzbekistan's rich musical heritage to the international audience.
The maqom master presented his unique vocal art, maqom performance, and skillful instrumental performances.
Furthermore, the specialist provided interesting information about the ancient Shashmaqom art of Uzbekistan, sharing thoughts on the history and modern development of maqom.
Additionally, SOAS professor Rachel Harris discussed her participation in the II International Maqom Festival held in Zomin, Jizzakh region, on June 27-28, 2024, and shared her sincere and positive thoughts on the event.
Rachel Harris's research focuses particularly on studying intangible cultural heritage in China and Central Asia. She has extensive experience in teaching ethnomusicology and is the author of numerous books and articles on the subject.
The masterclass sparked great interest among participants, and the active engagement of the foreign guests was evident during the enthusiastic positive discussions.
It was agreed to continue cultural events and develop intercultural dialogue between Uzbek art representatives and SOAS University in the future.
