In ancient and eternal Bukhara, on the occasion of April 1 — World Laughter Day — the traditional festivals “Nasreddin Afandi” and “Dishes of the East” were solemnly held.
As is well known, April 1 is widely celebrated worldwide as a day of laughter and humor. This date holds special significance because it brings joy to people, strengthens a positive mood, and encourages a lighthearted view of life. In ancient Bukhara, this holiday was also celebrated in a special atmosphere, combining folk traditions with modern cultural events.
This year’s festival began with a national caravan procession of participants led by Nasreddin Afandi — from the Poi Kalyan complex and the Ark Fortress to the Nadir Devanbegi Madrasah. National melodies echoed through the streets of the old city, while folklore and ethnographic groups, fairy-tale characters, and large puppets depicting national heroes left a strong impression on residents, festival guests, and especially foreign tourists.
The festival, aimed at broadly showcasing the tourist potential of this ancient region on an international level and promoting its historical values, is generating increasing interest not only among locals but also among international visitors.
The symbolic opening ceremony was held in the courtyard of the Nadir Devanbegi Madrasah at the monument to Nasreddin Afandi. The event featured a speech by the deputy khokim of the region, Botirjon Shokhriyorov, who highlighted the importance of the festival and its role in tourism development, while also congratulating everyone on Laughter Day.
As emphasized, Nasreddin Afandi is a unique figure in folk folklore, conveying life truths through wisdom and humor. Over the centuries, his stories have not only entertained people but also inspired reflection and thoughtful conclusions.
At the same time, the “Dishes of the East” festival showcases unique examples of national cuisine and the culinary art of Eastern peoples. Each dish tells a story, each flavor reflects culture, and each aroma embodies tradition. Guests have the opportunity to get acquainted with the cuisines of different peoples and experience their distinctive qualities. For the past ten years, these events, held in Bukhara on a grand scale, have contributed not only to the popularization of cultural heritage but also to strengthening friendship and mutual understanding between nations.
The festival also featured the “Dishes of the East” competition, held at the Samanid Mausoleum. Here, Bukhara’s best chefs, famous for their “sofi oshi,” competed with each other, delighting guests with national dishes.
Throughout the day, guests — both foreign and local tourists — enjoyed exhibitions of national crafts and traditional cuisine, as well as concerts and entertainment performances, creating a festive atmosphere for everyone.
These festivals serve to showcase Bukhara’s tourist potential on the international stage, promote national values, and strengthen cultural ties. Therefore, this holiday is not only an entertaining event but also an important cultural occasion that unites people and fosters a positive social atmosphere.
