During the tour, participants had the opportunity to closely explore Khorezm’s unique cultural heritage and historical monuments. Special attention was drawn to the ancient Kalajik complex, located in the Bagat district.
Kalajik (also known as the Fortress of Dawud), dating back to the 4th century BCE, has confirmed its historical significance through archaeological research. Situated among the sand dunes of the Karakum Desert, the fortress stands out as a remarkable example of ancient defensive architecture, with its distinctive structure, double-layered defensive walls, and impressive size. The surrounding oasis is noted for its natural resources, ecological purity, and the therapeutic properties of its lake.
The ecotourism center, established by the “Qalajiqqal’a OAZIS Ekoturizm” farming enterprise, is currently making a significant contribution to the development of the tourism sector. Launched in 2019, the resort includes a lake, zoo, hotels, restaurants, traditional craft shops, summer recreation areas, and various other infrastructure facilities.
Renowned for its wellness and recreational opportunities, the region attracts not only local tourists but also visitors from abroad. The healing properties of the salt lake—famous for its buoyant water in which one cannot sink—and the therapeutic sand baths have led many to compare it to the Dead Sea. With treatments conducted under medical supervision, the site is considered one of the best destinations for health recovery. As such, the Kalajik ecotourism complex plays a vital role in the development of tourism in Khorezm.
