Bringing cash into and out of Uzbekistan: important reminders for tourists

Under the current rules, foreign and national currency in cash may be brought into Uzbekistan in unlimited amounts. However, if the total cash you are carrying exceeds the equivalent of 100 million sums, you must state the full amount in the passenger customs declaration and present it to the customs officer. You may also declare amounts below this threshold voluntarily.
When leaving the country, you may take out cash up to the equivalent of 100 million sums without a declaration. If you take out more than this amount, the relevant customs requirements apply. For foreign citizens, this includes the amount of funds they declared when entering the country.
A common mistake among tourists is not stating a large amount of cash in the declaration when entering the country. Part of the money may be spent during the trip, and the rest may then need to be taken out. Without a document confirming the money was brought in legally, this can cause problems.
For example, if a tourist brings 15,000 US dollars into Uzbekistan, the rules require them to state the full amount in the declaration. Even if part of the money is spent during the trip, a copy of the declaration lets them confirm the remaining funds (even if they exceed 100 million sums). This is important when taking the money out of the country.
Recommendations for tourists:
• If the total cash you are carrying when entering Uzbekistan exceeds the equivalent of 100 million sums, declare all of it in full.
• Keep your copy of the declaration until you leave the country.
• Remember that the sum equivalent is calculated at the exchange rate of the Central Bank of the Republic of Uzbekistan on the day you cross the customs border.
• If you have questions about the rules, ask a customs officer before going through customs control.
• Following customs rules and keeping the necessary documents will help make your visit to Uzbekistan even more comfortable and stress-free.
