The suggested route begins at the Gur-e-Amir Mausoleum, followed by Registan Square, where visitors can admire the historic madrasahs and relax at cafés tucked away in their inner courtyards. The walking distance along this section of the route is less than one kilometre.
In the afternoon, participants are encouraged to visit the Shah-i-Zinda complex, which has benches where visitors can take a break during their walk. Depending on their available time and physical condition, they can continue to Siab Bazaar to purchase the famous Samarkand bread. Golf carts are also available for travelling along pedestrian streets, helping visitors save their energy.
After the marathon, Sirotina recommends sampling Samarkand’s national cuisine, particularly Samarkand plov, traditionally served with Anzur onions, as well as tandoor-baked samsa.
The Samarkand Marathon will take place on 7–8 November in Registan Square. Participants can choose from several distances: the full marathon, half marathon, 10 km, 5 km or 2 km, as well as take part in Nordic walking competitions. Registration remains open until 2 November.
The marathon not only highlights Samarkand’s potential for sports tourism but also offers participants an opportunity to discover the city’s rich historical and cultural heritage and distinctive national cuisine.
