The relevant document was signed on 30 July following talks between the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Shavkat Mirziyoyev, and the President of the Kyrgyz Republic, Sadyr Japarov. The exchange of bilateral documents took place in the presence of the two Heads of State.

The Protocol is aimed at further liberalising the regime of mutual travel between the two countries, simplifying the rules governing the stay of citizens in the neighbouring state, and creating more favourable conditions for the development of tourism, cross-border cooperation, trade, business relations, and humanitarian ties.

Under the Protocol, citizens of Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan are exempt from the requirement to obtain permanent and/or temporary registration with the competent authorities of the host country for 15 days from the date of crossing the state border.

The new measure is expected to provide an additional boost to bilateral tourism. By eliminating the need to complete registration during the first two weeks of their stay, travellers will be able to plan leisure, family and business trips with greater flexibility. The initiative is particularly significant amid the rapid development of intra-regional tourism across Central Asia.

Kyrgyzstan has traditionally been one of Uzbekistan’s largest inbound tourism markets. During the first half of 2026, approximately 1.9 million citizens of Kyrgyzstan visited Uzbekistan, making the country one of Uzbekistan’s leading international source markets for tourism.
