On the basis of this initiative, on April 29, 2025, the United Nations General Assembly in New York unanimously adopted a resolution proclaiming April 29 as the International Day of Remembrance for Earthquake Victims.
The resolution is based on the proposal of the President of Uzbekistan to establish a day of remembrance and solidarity aimed at honoring earthquake victims and emphasizing the importance of international cooperation in this field. The document calls on UN Member States, UN system organizations, and other international institutions to support the observance of this day, including through informational and educational activities aimed at raising public awareness, strengthening resilience, and improving emergency preparedness.
In this context, it was proposed that the first international event dedicated to this day be held in Uzbekistan as a sign of remembrance and respect for earthquake victims worldwide, as well as in connection with the 60th anniversary of the devastating 1966 Tashkent earthquake.
The inaugural international event brought together more than 100 specialists from around 30 countries.
The conference became an important platform for strengthening international cooperation in seismic safety, disaster risk reduction, and public preparedness.
Within the framework of the event, participants exchanged best international practices, discussed modern approaches, and identified concrete areas for enhancing cooperation at regional and global levels.
