At the initiative of the head of state, the complex was completely reconstructed and significantly expanded to reflect the scholar’s high spiritual status, accommodate the growing number of pilgrims, and support the development of ziyarat tourism in the country.
Today, the complex covers an area of about 63.2 hectares. It features a majestic mosque with a capacity of 10,000 people, administrative buildings, a traditional-style iwan with 154 columns, and well-maintained walking areas.
Using the most advanced information technologies, a unique innovative museum has been built, consisting of nine pavilions. It presents the life and scholarly legacy of Imam al-Bukhari, known in the Islamic world as the “Sultan of Hadith Scholars,” as well as his contribution to the development of Islamic education. The museum also offers exhibits on the stories of 25 prophets mentioned in the Holy Quran, the genealogy of the Prophet Muhammad, information about his life in Mecca and Medina, and the process of collecting and compiling hadiths.
Special attention has been given to infrastructure: on an adjacent area of 15 hectares, a modern tourist cluster has been created, including hotels and family guest houses.
Whereas previously the complex could accommodate up to 12,000 visitors per day, after modernization its capacity has increased more than fivefold—to 65,000 people daily—significantly enhancing Samarkand’s potential as a center of ziyarat tourism.
For the convenience of visitors, the complex now includes a modern tourist center, service facilities, a spacious parking area, and fully upgraded engineering and utility systems.
