The idea of establishing the center was proposed by President Shavkat Mirziyoyev in 2017 during a session of the United Nations General Assembly. The center is conceived as a space that brings together history, science, and modernity.
The complex, built over nearly eight years, includes a museum, a library, and scientific and educational facilities. Among the key exhibitions are the Quran Hall featuring the Mushaf of Uthman, as well as sections on pre-Islamic culture, the scientific flourishing of the 9th–13th centuries, the Timurid era, and the modern development of Uzbekistan.
The center also serves as a scientific hub: it hosts international forums and operates an expert council with the participation of organizations such as IRCICA, ICESCO, and the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies.
The Center’s library collection includes more than 2,500 manuscripts and lithographs, around 40,000 printed publications, and over 350,000 materials in electronic format. Approximately 2,000 unique artifacts have already been returned to the country.
Thanks to international cooperation and the repatriation of unique historical treasures, the center enhances Uzbekistan’s appeal as a destination for cultural and educational tourism.
The Islamic Civilization Center is shaping a new image of Tashkent as a modern cultural hub that combines rich heritage with innovation.
