Author Joel Day, a British journalist, notes that Khiva is over 2,500 years old, and its location on the border of the Karakum and Kyzylkum deserts gives the city a unique atmosphere.
The article emphasizes that Khiva was a key point along the Great Silk Road, and the implementation of a new railway project in Uzbekistan could significantly boost its tourism appeal, making the city one of the country’s most visited historical centers.
While Khiva’s historical significance as a Silk Road monument is exceptional, tourist traffic is currently lower than in cities such as Samarkand and Bukhara. However, the situation is expected to change with the launch of the new high-speed rail line between Tashkent and Khiva, which will reduce travel time from approximately 15 hours to seven hours. According to the author, this development could fundamentally transform the city’s future.
The article highlights that Khiva’s main architectural monuments are concentrated within the Ichan Kala fortress walls, a unique open-air museum complex. Entering through the Western Gate, visitors are immediately drawn to the Muhammad Amin Khan Madrasah, built in the mid-19th century.
Joel Day also details the architecture of Kunya-Ark, where building façades are adorned with deep niches and intricate geometric patterns. Other notable sites mentioned include the square in front of Kunya-Ark, the Muhammad Rahim Khan Madrasah, and the Juma Mosque. The latter, built in the 10th century, is a rare example of early Islamic architecture, featuring a rectangular layout supported by more than 200 wooden columns, some of which are over a thousand years old.
The journalist notes that Khiva is ideal for walking tours, as all major attractions are within easy reach. Concluding the article, Joel Day mentions direct flights from London to Tashkent, from where visitors can reach Khiva by high-speed train. He also provides accommodation recommendations, including approximate prices and booking tips.
