In recent years, Uzbekistan has been actively implementing reforms in the tourism industry and increasingly showcasing its tourism potential on the international stage. Hosting major international events, notably the 25th session of the General Assembly of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) in Samarkand, has strengthened Uzbekistan’s position on the global tourism map. These events have played an important role not only in enhancing the country’s image but also in developing its tourism infrastructure.
In 2025, Samarkand is also expected to host a series of prestigious international conferences — including meetings of CITES (the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) and a UNESCO conference. These events will contribute further to strengthening Uzbekistan’s status as a center for environmental sustainability, cultural heritage preservation, and global dialogue.
Moreover, large-scale projects are actively being implemented in new tourism sectors such as ecotourism, cultural, historical, gastronomic, and wellness tourism. Uzbekistan’s unique nature, rich history, and cultural heritage are becoming especially attractive to foreign tourists. This, in turn, supports the development of regional tourism, the creation of new jobs, and the improvement of local communities' well-being.
Important factors in tourism development also include consideration of existing local conditions, creation of modern infrastructure, and training of qualified personnel in hospitality. These factors fully correspond with the 2025 slogan — "Tourism and Sustainable Transformation."
Background: World Tourism Day is celebrated annually on September 27. It was established in 1979 at the General Assembly of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO, now “UN Tourism”), held in Torremolinos, Spain. The objective is to promote tourism, highlight its contribution to the global economy, and strengthen international cooperation.
