Dr. Hoon Seok Yoo, Distinguished Research Fellow at KEI, presented the experience of the Republic of Korea in the field of Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA), including methodologies for forecasting the environmental impacts of development strategies, programmes and plans, early identification of potential risks, and comparative analysis of alternative solutions, taking into account environmental, economic and social factors.
Particular attention was paid to the application of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and spatial analysis to identify the environmental characteristics of territories, assess anthropogenic pressures, environmental protection restrictions and climate-related risks.
A separate presentation was also delivered on the implementation of Best Available Techniques (BAT) at enterprises in the electric power sector. The participants reviewed technological solutions aimed at reducing pollutant emissions, ensuring the rational use of water resources, improving energy efficiency, managing industrial waste, preventing soil contamination, and reducing dust and noise impacts.
As part of the visit, the delegation also visited Green University, where discussions focused on prospects for joint scientific research, the exchange of applied developments, and the training of highly qualified specialists in ecology and environmental protection.
The visit opened up additional opportunities to strengthen the Uzbek-Korean partnership, improve the national environmental expertise system, introduce innovative environmental protection technologies, and further develop scientific and educational capacity.
