Uzbekistan’s participation in the Aarhus convention summit: A firm commitment to strengthening environmental transparency and public participation

The country is represented at the international forum by Gayrat Mukhamedov, Director General of the State Environmental Expertise Centreunder the National Committee on ecology and climate change Republic of Uzbekistan. The high-level meeting brought together ministers from various countries, heads of national agencies and institutions, international organizations, as well as representatives of civil society.
The central theme of the gathering is to enhance the importance of the Aarhus Convention and the PRTR Protocol in the context of the “triple planetary crisis,” which includes climate change, biodiversity loss, and environmental pollution.
During the panel discussions, international practices were presented in the following areas:
• ensuring open and equal access to environmental information;
• expanding public participation in decision-making processes;
• improving mechanisms of environmental accountability.
In addition, amid global geopolitical instability, the draft Geneva Declaration aimed at protecting public rights became a key topic of discussion.
Uzbekistan’s participation in this forum once again reaffirms that the country is implementing comprehensive reforms aligned with international standards in the areas of environmental transparency, environmental impact assessment, environmental monitoring, and ensuring the public’s right to access environmental information.
It was emphasized that enhancing transparency in environmental decision-making, expanding opportunities for citizens to express their views on environmental issues, and disclosing environmental information remain priority areas for Uzbekistan.
