A monopoly is characterized by the dominant position of one entity or a group of persons in a certain sphere of economic activity, who completely control the market. As a result, competition is restricted, consumers are deprived of the opportunity to choose, and the balance of market mechanisms is disrupted.
As highlighted at the meeting, the main negative consequences of monopoly are as follows:
-
Inefficient allocation of resources – a decline in economic performance.
-
Growth of income inequality – deepening of social stratification.
-
Slowing down of innovative development – a halt in scientific and technological progress.
-
Restriction of democratic principles – economic dominance negatively affects both the social and political spheres.
The Law of the Republic of Uzbekistan “On Competition” is the main legal source of antimonopoly policy. This law is aimed at ensuring a healthy competitive environment among market participants, protecting consumer interests, and establishing fair “rules of the game” in the market.
In accordance with the requirements of the law, it provides for:
-
restriction of abuses of a dominant position by business entities in the market;
-
prevention of illegal transactions, such as cartel agreements and artificial price-setting;
-
prohibition of decisions by state bodies that restrict competition;
-
clear regulation of the activities of natural monopolies.
Based on the opinions expressed at the meeting, it can be said that compliance with antimonopoly legislation is important not only for ensuring economic stability, but also for creating an atmosphere of fairness, transparency, and trust in society. Combating monopoly contributes to the sustainable development of a market economy, stimulates innovation, and strengthens social protection of the population.
Therefore, cooperation between state bodies, business entities, and civil society institutions is a necessary condition for the effective implementation of antimonopoly policy.
