The great Sahibqiran Amir Temur was not only a remarkable figure in the history of Central Asia but also a statesman, a glorious military commander, and a patron of science and knowledge who left an indelible mark on the history of many countries around the world. The statehood and spirituality of the era of Amir Temur and the Temurids occupy a special place in the history of our people due to their potential, content, educational power, and influence.
As one of the great conquerors who left a lasting mark in world history and united 27 lands, Amir Temur possessed an exceptionally rich spiritual world. Perhaps the world has rarely seen a conqueror who had such deep respect and love for books. Many great rulers left behind destroyed cities and burned monuments, but Amir Temur is remembered as a builder and creator. For this reason, many books have been written about Amir Temur both in the East and the West. Some of these works are historical, while others are literary.
Over the past six centuries, the global scholarly community has produced more than 500 major historical works in European languages and around 900 in Eastern languages dedicated to Amir Temur. Among them are Sharafiddin Ali Yazdi’s “Zafarnama,” Ibn Arabshah’s “The Wonders of Destiny in the History of Timur,” and in the West Ruy González de Clavijo’s “Embassy to Tamerlane.” Even the famous German poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe devoted a chapter titled “Temurnama” in his work West-Eastern Divan.
The greatness of Amir Temur as a lawmaker and statesman is clearly reflected in “Temur’s Code” (Temur Tuzuklari). According to historians, this work is one of the most meaningful and valuable writings of its time. “Temur’s Code” can be regarded as a perfect concept of statehood and an everlasting spiritual monument. This is because such a rare political guide written in defense of the rights of free people and the interests of the nation is hardly found in the history of other peoples.
In the “Code,” it is stated:
“If faith in the heart is strong, our lineage will never disappear and our language will never be forgotten. If faith weakens, not only language but also belief will fade away. Truth means health, order, and justice. Strength lies in justice.”
The life of the great Sahibqiran was deeply imbued with the principle “Strength is in justice.” For this reason, the ancient city of Samarkand, which he restored and developed, became in the 14th century one of the most beautiful cities in the world and a center of science and enlightenment. The principles of social justice established by Amir Temur have proven their vitality over time. The laws and principles of statehood founded by the Sahibqiran are still highly appreciated by scholars around the world.
Another exemplary aspect of Amir Temur’s activity for us is that through trade and economic relations he achieved great success in creating a unified space connecting different peoples and countries. Amir Temur considered the economy the main foundation of any state. As he emphasized in his “Code”:
“The state and sovereignty stand on three things — property, treasury, and army.”
With this statement, Amir Temur stressed that economic resources are essential for the survival and social development of a state.
Anyone who refers to “Temur’s Code,” regardless of their profession or knowledge, can find a valuable program for their goals, interests, and future. For example, soldiers can learn the perfect science of warfare, builders can study architecture, diplomats can master the art of communication, and athletes can develop determination and the will to achieve victory.
Today, the large-scale construction and restoration works being carried out at the sites associated with the Temurids fill all our compatriots with pride. As Sahibqiran once said:
“Those who doubt our power should look at the buildings we have erected.”
This material and spiritual creation testifies to the bright future of our country. Indeed, as we move toward the goal of building a great state, the spiritual principles of the past will undoubtedly guide us toward high development through the path of justice.
