The purpose of this visit is to assess the status of environmental remediation (reclamation) projects being implemented at former uranium mine sites in Uzbekistan, funded by the European Commission and carried out through the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD).
According to the program’s first day, a delegation led by Mr. Afonso de Castro Malheiro, Senior Auditor of the European Court of Auditors, met with representatives of Uzbekistan’s Committee for Industrial, Radiation, and Nuclear Safety — the national regulatory authority in radiation and nuclear safety — as well as with specialists from the Radiation and Nuclear Safety Department.
During the meeting, information was exchanged regarding regulatory issues surrounding radiation safety during ongoing reclamation efforts at the former Yangiabad and Charkesar uranium mine sites. Additionally, both parties discussed the enforcement of legal safety requirements, the physical protection of the facilities, radioactive waste accounting, and the implementation of state oversight and inspections at these sites.
