Currently, Uzbekistan is undertaking measures to rationally utilize fuel and energy resources and increase their production volume, including by developing nuclear energy, to meet the growing demand for electricity in the country. To continue these reforms seamlessly and ensure safety at industrial facilities that serve as economic drivers, Presidential Decree No. 186 dated May 24, 2024, designated the Committee for Industrial, Radiation, and Nuclear Safety as the authorized government body responsible for implementing a unified state policy and overseeing radiation and nuclear safety at nuclear energy and technology sites, as well as industrial safety at hazardous production facilities.
To systematically carry out the assigned tasks, and in line with the relevant provision of Presidential Decree No. PF-224 dated December 24, 2024, titled “On additional measures to improve state oversight in the field of industrial, radiation, and nuclear safety,” the IAEA's preliminary Integrated Regulatory Review Service (IRRS) mission was mandated.
For reference: the IRRS mission is one of the IAEA’s expert evaluation services aimed at increasing the effectiveness of national safety infrastructure by assessing the conformity of national, legal, and regulatory frameworks with IAEA safety standards.
In January, an online meeting was organized, during which discussions were held with IAEA experts on conducting the IRRS mission. As a result, an “Expert Meeting” is planned to be held in July 2025 with the participation of IAEA experts to coordinate the upcoming IRRS mission. This meeting format has served as an effective platform for promptly addressing organizational matters and exchanging insights.
