As a result of numerous projects implemented in the energy sector, electricity production in the country has increased by 30 percent over the past five years, reaching 81.5 billion kilowatt-hours. To meet the growing demand, renewable energy sources are also being actively developed. Their share in total generation has reached 16 percent, with an additional 3.2 gigawatts of capacity created last year.
This sector requires forward-looking vision and preparation for the future. According to forecasts, Uzbekistan’s electricity consumption will reach 121 billion kilowatt-hours by 2035. Therefore, measures are being taken to develop energy in all directions. In particular, by 2030, it is planned to increase the share of “green” energy in total generation to 50 percent.
In the long term, nuclear energy is expected to become one of the key base sources. Currently, work is underway on a project to build a small modular nuclear power plant. To discuss the feasibility of the project and develop a roadmap, meetings of working groups have been held. A Joint Action Plan for 2025–2027 has been developed in cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
Every stage of the future station's construction — from design to completion — will be under strict oversight from the IAEA, with implementation of the most advanced global practices and safety standards.
At the meeting, officials provided updates on the project's progress, negotiations with partners, the process of obtaining permits and financing, as well as the technical and economic aspects and plans for building a large-scale nuclear power plant.
