📢 IAEA INIR "Follow-up" Mission Commences in Uzbekistan: Comprehensive Assessment of National Nuclear Infrastructure Underway

This mission is being conducted to ensure the implementation of the directives of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan, in strict compliance with the highest international standards and IAEA requirements.
🎯 Key Objectives and Tasks of the Mission
This event represents a crucial milestone in the consistent implementation of state policy in the field of nuclear energy. The mission is focused on the following priority objectives:

Expert Analysis: To comprehensively review the current status of the national nuclear infrastructure from an expert perspective;

Progress Assessment: To evaluate the implementation progress of the recommendations and suggestions provided during the 2021 IAEA mission;

System Enhancement: To develop concrete proposals for further improving the state management and regulatory framework in the field of peaceful uses of atomic energy.

For Reference: The designated experts possess extensive international experience in conducting similar high-level missions across Asian and European countries (including Vietnam, the Philippines, Poland, Estonia, and Kazakhstan). Alongside international specialists, representatives of relevant ministries and agencies of the Republic of Uzbekistan are also actively participating in the discussions.
💼 Day One Outcomes: Key Issues Under Discussion
At the opening ceremony of the mission, IAEA experts highly commended the excellent level of Uzbekistan's long-standing cooperation with the Agency.
The Uzbek delegation included representatives from the "Uzatom" Agency, serving as the national organization implementing the nuclear power program (NEPIO), and the Committee for Industrial, Radiation and Nuclear Safety, acting as the independent regulatory body. The parties thoroughly discussed the capabilities and milestones achieved in developing the national nuclear infrastructure since the 2021 mission.
In the afternoon, practical discussions continued within the framework of the following key areas:

"National Position" – The energy policy of the Republic of Uzbekistan for the period up to 2035;

"Nuclear Safety" – Plans to further enhance the regulatory, legal, technical, and practical frameworks in the field of nuclear safety;

"Management" – The activities of the regulatory body and the management systems of all major organizations involved in the country's nuclear power program.
📅 Next Steps
The mission will continue its work until June 26, 2026. Upon its conclusion, the IAEA will prepare an initial official report containing concrete recommendations aimed at the further safe and efficient development of the national nuclear infrastructure of the Republic of Uzbekistan.
