Strengthening Cooperation Between Uzbekistan and the USA in Nuclear Safety

🤝 The meeting was attended by the Chairman of the Committee, A. Rafiqov, and a delegation led by C. Klein, U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Nuclear Nonproliferation and Energy Competitiveness.
⚛️ Cooperation within the FIRST Program During the meeting, the parties exchanged views on the work accomplished and future plans within the framework of the "Foundational Infrastructure for Responsible Use of Small Modular Reactor Technology" (FIRST) program. 📊 As noted by L. Denlinger, a member of the delegation and head of the FIRST program, the online training courses organized by the U.S. company NUMARK for the Committee’s staff were successfully implemented.
📚 Strengthening the Regulatory Framework It was noted that the second phase of the program involves continued cooperation in: • Analyzing existing regulatory documents based on international standards; • Improving newly developed regulatory acts; • Strengthening the safety regulation system.
🌐 Development of Bilateral Cooperation C. Klein highly praised: • The activities in the field of safety regulation in the use of nuclear energy; • The ongoing preparation of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the competent authorities of the two countries.
🤝 Furthermore, the U.S. side expressed its readiness to further strengthen cooperation and share expertise in ensuring safety during the utilization of modern small modular reactor (SMR) technologies.
This meeting marks another significant step toward the implementation of modern technologies and the adaptation of the national regulatory base to international standards, reflecting the expanding international cooperation of Uzbekistan in the field of nuclear safety.
