Uzbekistan to Prepare Athletes for the Olympic and Paralympic Games with a Comprehensive Strategy
A Presidential Decree (PQ–221, dated July 8, 2025) has been adopted outlining a comprehensive preparation program for Uzbekistan’s athletes ahead of the XXXIV Summer Olympic Games and the XVIII Paralympic Games, scheduled to be held in Los Angeles in 2028.
Key Goals:
-
Increase medal counts in top-priority sports such as boxing, judo, taekwondo, freestyle wrestling, and weightlifting.
-
Obtain Olympic licenses in 21 developing sports, including triathlon, volleyball, table tennis, basketball, and modern pentathlon.
-
Strengthen cooperation with international sports organizations.
Sports will be classified into priority, promising, and developing categories based on Olympic and Paralympic results. This classification will be reviewed every 4 years following each Olympic cycle.
“New Uzbekistan Olympic Heights” Competitions to Be Launched
Starting in 2025, national championships among teenagers and youth will be held as part of a three-stage competition system under the name "New Uzbekistan Olympic Heights".
Athletes participating must train under physical or legal entities officially engaged in sports training.
The republican finals will be held annually in the Olympic Village as the "President’s Olympics".
Winners of these competitions will be assigned as reserves to national teams:
-
1st and 2nd place: Republican Olympic and Paralympic Training Center.
-
3rd place: Regional Olympic and Paralympic Training Centers.
Modernization of Olympic and Paralympic Training Centers
From the 2025/2026 academic year, training at the Republican Center will follow a two-stage model:
-
Olympic and Paralympic School for 8th to 11th graders.
-
Olympic and Paralympic College for 1st and 2nd-year students.
Starting from 2026:
-
Student-athlete enrollment will reach 800.
-
Monthly scholarships will be provided from the budget allocated by the Ministry of Sports.
Winners and medalists of the Olympic Games and World Championships (in Olympic disciplines) will be directly admitted to specialized higher military education institutions.
