During the meeting, the parties discussed reforms in the higher education systems of the two countries, modern approaches to training specialists, and potential areas of cooperation.
Qo‘ng‘irotboy Sharipov noted that in recent years, joint educational programs have been widely developed in Uzbekistan. He emphasized that the service sector in the country is rapidly growing, and the Philippine experience in this field is of great significance.
The Minister also highlighted the major changes taking place in Uzbekistan’s energy sector. According to him, over the past decade, the country has transitioned from an energy shortage to becoming an exporter of energy resources. At the same time, he expressed Uzbekistan’s readiness to cooperate in training specialists in the fields of renewable energy, electronics, food industry, pharmaceuticals, and textiles.
In turn, Chairperson Shirley Agrupis provided information about the education system of the Philippines. She stated that the Philippine education system encompasses three main areas — school education, vocational education, and higher education — which function in close integration.
As Agrupis noted, there is currently no formal cooperation between the Philippines and Uzbekistan in higher education, but there is great potential for collaboration. The Philippines does not have branches of foreign universities, so implementing joint educational programs could become a new and promising direction for the country.
The Philippine side also mentioned that the country leads in training specialists in medicine and pedagogy and conducts scientific research in nuclear medicine and climatology. Therefore, establishing academic and scientific cooperation between Philippine universities and Uzbek research institutions is of great importance.
At the end of the meeting, both sides agreed to prepare a memorandum of understanding to strengthen cooperation in the fields of education and science and to formalize their partnership.
