In 2019, mobile device registration was mandated by the Government. To advance the development of tourism, enhance citizen convenience, and safeguard individual rights by curbing unlawful mobile device registration, another Government decision was subsequently implemented.
Under this decision, several provisions have been established during the mobile device registration process for both local residents and foreign nationals. Most notably, individuals can register up to two mobile devices (phones) they've imported from overseas without incurring customs duties.
Prior to this, citizens were permitted to register just one phone they had brought from abroad without any customs charges. Secondly, the potential misuse of citizens' personal data during the phone registration process will be eliminated.
A remote (online) biometric identification system known as Face-ID has been implemented for phone registration in the UZIMEI system. This advancement ensures that individuals no longer rely on third-party information for registration. With this technology, an individual can register their own mobile devices online using their biometric data. This can be accomplished by directly accessing the system through the official IMEI code registration website (uzimei.uz), a unified online public service portal, and its mobile version, with the option of biometric identification through system registrars.
This technology now enables mobile device registration with the direct involvement of individuals, establishing a foundation for safeguarding their rights and reducing instances of unlawful registration. Additionally, the timeframe during which foreign visitors, whether for business or tourism, can use their mobile devices without registration has been extended from the previous 30 current calendar days to 60 calendar days.
Thanks to this improvement, foreign visitors who make frequent trips to our country will have the privilege of utilizing their phones within Uzbekistan for a duration of up to two months. This extension in the duration of mobile device use is particularly relevant for foreign experts engaged in investment projects within the Republic of Uzbekistan, as their stay typically exceeds one month.
Simultaneously, the requirement for citizens to declare each mobile device upon crossing the customs border, and the subsequent integration of these devices into the registration system, ensures the legality of their import. This measure effectively curbs unlawful actions. Consequently, citizens will now have the capability to register a second mobile device they bring with them in the UZIMEI system without encountering any issues.
