Uzbekistan and Egypt: A New Stage of Cooperation in the Religious and Educational Sphere

An official visit of the delegation of the Republic of Uzbekistan to the Arab Republic of Egypt is currently underway.
Yesterday, a meeting was held between the delegation members and the Grand Imam of Egypt, Head of the Al-Azhar complex, Sheikh Ahmed Al-Tayyeb.
The meeting was attended by Muzaffar Kamilov, Head of the Department for Religious and Educational Affairs of the Presidential Administration of the Republic of Uzbekistan and Rector of the International Islamic Academy of Uzbekistan; Davronbek Makhsudov, First Deputy Chairman of the Committee on Religious Affairs; Khomidjon Ishmatbekov, First Deputy Chairman of the Muslim Board of Uzbekistan; as well as other responsible officials. From the Egyptian side, participants included Hasan Mahmud Shafii, a member of the Council of Senior Scholars of Al-Azhar, and Mansur Kilichev, Ambassador of Uzbekistan to Egypt.
During the discussion, Sheikh Ahmed Al-Tayyeb highly praised the efforts of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Shavkat Mirziyoyev, in strengthening bilateral cooperation and expressed readiness to establish an Imam Bukhari Center within the structure of Al-Azhar in cooperation with Uzbekistan’s scientific institutions, as well as to jointly study the rich heritage of great scholars.
In turn, the Uzbek delegation expressed gratitude for the warm reception and emphasized that the meeting opens new opportunities for cooperation, noting that the development of a “roadmap” for implementing joint projects is both timely and essential.
As part of the visit, the Uzbek delegation also met with Egypt’s Minister of Awqaf, Professor Osama Sayyid Azhari, where issues related to strengthening long-standing historical and spiritual ties between the two countries were discussed.
The parties exchanged experience in managing waqf property, developing social protection systems, and countering extremism through educational and awareness-raising efforts.
Following the meetings, the sides agreed to establish a joint working group in the identified areas and to develop a comprehensive memorandum of cooperation.
The meetings were held in a friendly and constructive atmosphere.
