The event brought together representatives of relevant ministries and agencies of the Republic of Uzbekistan, international organisations, development partners, and international experts in the field of sustainable development.
The main objectives of the seminar were to assess Uzbekistan’s progress towards achieving the SDGs, improve international and national monitoring mechanisms, analyse sustainable development indicators across regions, and exchange experience with international experts.
At the opening ceremony of the seminar, a Joint Declaration between the Ministry of Economy and Finance and SDSN was signed. The document provides an important foundation for formally establishing SDSN’s activities in Uzbekistan and initiating long-term cooperation with this prominent international network in support of the country’s sustainable development priorities.
The signing of the Joint Declaration marked the beginning of a new stage of cooperation aimed at supporting the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals in Uzbekistan, making effective use of scientific and expert expertise, and integrating international experience and best practices into national practice.
During the seminar, SDSN experts presented the methodology of the Sustainable Development Goals Index (SDG Index), including the selection and assessment of indicators, data normalisation and aggregation, as well as methods for tracking trends in progress towards achieving the SDGs.
The participants also discussed the analysis of Uzbekistan’s sustainable development performance, the identification of relationships between national and regional indicators, and the effective use of available data. Views were further exchanged on the application of modern Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and remote sensing technologies in monitoring SDG indicators, particularly international approaches to assessing land degradation.
Particular attention was given to the preparation of sustainable development reports in Uzbekistan, aligning the national system for assessing SDG implementation with international approaches, and improving the quality of regional data.
The meetings and seminar held as part of the SDSN delegation’s visit to Uzbekistan will contribute to expanding cooperation in sustainable development, drawing on the expertise of international specialists, and further strengthening Uzbekistan’s progress towards achieving the SDGs.
