In this regard, on June 15 of this year, a high-level roundtable discussion and media briefing were held at the Ministry of Economy and Finance of the Republic of Uzbekistan on the topic “The Role of the International Development Association in Reducing Global Poverty and Its Cooperation with the Government of Uzbekistan.” The event was co-chaired by Jamshid Kuchkarov, Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Uzbekistan — Minister of Economy and Finance, and Akihiko Nishio, World Bank Vice President for Development Finance.
During the event, representatives of the Ministry of Economy and Finance and the World Bank announced that a global meeting of the International Development Association will be held in Tashkent this December. Uzbekistan will become the first country in Central Asia to host this high-level event.
Established in 1960, the International Development Association is the World Bank’s fund for countries with lower income levels. The International Development Association supports development across a wide range of areas, including expanding access to education, healthcare and drinking water services, attracting investment in agriculture, improving urban and rural infrastructure, creating jobs, and promoting entrepreneurship.
The Association’s financial resources are replenished every three years. The 21st replenishment cycle of IDA resources — the IDA21 program — was completed in December 2024. As a result, a record financing package of USD 100 billion was formed for 2026–2028. Under the IDA21 program, IDA financing is expected to support nearly 1.9 billion people in 78 countries in achieving various socio-economic development goals.
The briefing emphasized that Uzbekistan’s cooperation with the International Development Association has a history of nearly 35 years and has continued steadily since the country joined the World Bank institutions in 1992. Since 2017, bilateral partnership has reached a qualitatively new stage.
Today, the International Development Association has become Uzbekistan’s largest international development partner. In particular, Uzbekistan is among IDA’s 10 largest client countries globally. At present, with the support of the World Bank, the Government is implementing more than 25 projects across various sectors of the economy, with a total value of nearly USD 5.5 billion. More than 60 percent of these funds come from IDA grants and concessional loans.
One of the key factors behind Uzbekistan’s selection as the host country for the IDA meeting was the broad socio-economic reforms carried out over the past decade under the leadership of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Shavkat Mirziyoyev, and their results. These achievements are widely recognized internationally.
Another important factor influencing the decision to hold the IDA meeting in Tashkent was the high level and steady development of bilateral cooperation between the World Bank and Uzbekistan. In particular, the country ranks second in the Europe and Central Asia region in terms of the volume of IDA financing attracted.
As expected, during the upcoming international event, senior representatives of donor countries and countries using IDA financing, with the participation of World Bank leadership, will discuss the interim results of the implementation of the IDA21 program. The meeting will also serve as an important platform for launching discussions on the next replenishment cycle of financial resources for 2028–2031 — IDA22.
During the IDA meeting to be held in Tashkent in December, Uzbekistan’s best practices in ensuring sustainable economic growth, improving the well-being of the population, combating poverty, and creating new jobs will be widely showcased. In particular, the results of projects being implemented across various sectors with IDA participation will be presented to the international community.
