The event was attended by World Bank Group President Ajay Banga, UN Secretary-General António Guterres, heads of international financial institutions, and representatives of various countries, including the Deputy Prime Minister – Minister of Economy and Finance of the Republic of Uzbekistan Jamshid Kuchkarov.
The “Water Forward” initiative aims to improve water security by supporting reforms in the water sector, modernizing infrastructure, and enhancing resilience to droughts and floods, thereby contributing to food security, job creation, and economic growth.
Within the framework of the initiative, participating countries will be able to mobilize financial and analytical resources from international financial institutions, governments, the private sector, and development partners to implement water sector reforms and infrastructure projects.
A key instrument of the initiative is the development of national water compacts, which define priority reform areas and facilitate coordinated financing and implementation.
At the event, the first group of 14 countries announced their participation in the “Water Forward” initiative, including Uzbekistan, which has developed its national Water Compact in cooperation with the World Bank.
The Water Compact is fully aligned with Uzbekistan’s “Uzbekistan – 2030” Strategy and предусматривает the expansion of water-saving technologies, reduction of irrigation losses, improved access to safe drinking water and sanitation, and digitalization of water resource management.
In particular, Uzbekistan aims to ensure water security for at least 3.8 million people by 2030, modernize irrigation systems, reduce water losses by 25 percent, and attract significant investments into water infrastructure.
At the conclusion, Uzbekistan reaffirmed its commitment to working with international partners to strengthen water security, enhance climate resilience, and support sustainable economic development.
