Uzbekistan and Afghanistan Reach Major Agreements in Light Industry and Trade
On May 20, 2026, as part of the official visit to Afghanistan, a bilateral meeting was held between Nozimjon Kholmurodov, Director of the Agency for the Development of Light Industry under the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Uzbekistan, and Nooruddin Azizi, Acting Minister of Industry and Commerce of Afghanistan.
During the talks, the parties discussed the development of industrial cooperation, expansion of trade turnover, and creation of new production capacities between the two countries.
The sides reached agreements on cultivating Uzbek cotton varieties in Afghan provinces, establishing deep cotton processing facilities, and organizing training programs for Afghan specialists in Uzbekistan.
Special attention was also given to the development of the silk industry, introduction of advanced technologies for local communities, and professional capacity building. In the industrial sector, concrete tasks were outlined for launching leather processing and tannery plants, establishing cashmere collection centers, and opening new garment manufacturing enterprises or modernizing existing factories.
At the conclusion of the meeting, the parties agreed to open branded stores and trade outlets of Uzbek enterprises in major provinces of Afghanistan, organize business visits of major Afghan importers of light industry products to Uzbekistan, and hold a large-scale Uzbekistan–Afghanistan Light Industry Exhibition in the city of Termez.
