A meeting between Aziz Abdukhakimov, Minister of Ecology, Environmental Protection and Climate Change of the Republic of Uzbekistan, and Inmin Yan, Vice President of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) for South, Central, and West Asia, took place at the Ministry of Ecology. The meeting was also attended by senior officials of the ministry and its subordinate agencies.
At the beginning of the meeting, the Uzbek side expressed its gratitude for the ADB’s longstanding partnership and consistent support, particularly in the areas of waste management, institutional reform implementation, and the promotion of the green economy in Uzbekistan.
It was especially noted that the ADB delegation’s visit to Namangan, participation in the International Forum “From Poverty to Prosperity”, and the meeting with President Shavkat Mirziyoyev have made a significant contribution to strengthening bilateral cooperation.
During the talks, it was highlighted that, by the initiative of the President, 2025 has been declared the “Year of Environmental Protection and the Green Economy” in Uzbekistan. This decision reflects the country’s strategic course toward establishing a new environmentally oriented development model, expanding the use of renewable energy sources, and introducing innovative green technologies.
Sharifbek Hasanov, Director of the Agency for Waste Management and Circular Economy Development, presented information on projects implemented jointly with the ADB, including a $60 million initiative for sustainable municipal solid waste management. Within the framework of this program, waste collection vehicles, excavators, and other specialized equipment have been procured.
New projects on sustainable waste management and circular economy development were also presented during the meeting. Of particular importance is the three-year program to reduce plastic waste by 60 percent, which envisages the installation of plastic collection containers, incentives for recycling, and a gradual phase-out of single-use plastic products.
In addition, it was noted that through joint training courses organized with the ADB Institute, covering topics such as carbon trading and modern waste management practices, special attention is being paid to enhancing professional qualifications and introducing advanced recycling technologies.
At the conclusion of the meeting, both sides expressed confidence in the continued strengthening of the partnership and in the joint implementation of new, forward-looking projects aimed at advancing sustainable and green development in Uzbekistan.
