At a briefing, the head of the agency's department, Aziza Nazarova, reported that projects for generating electricity through the thermal processing of solid household waste are being implemented in all regions of Uzbekistan.
The large-scale reforms carried out under the leadership of the head of our state in the field of environmental protection, radical reform of the waste management system and the transition to a "green economy" are yielding another important practical result.
The second stage of electricity generation projects through the thermal processing of solid household waste is being implemented in our country. Upon completion of this stage, these projects will fully cover all regions of Uzbekistan.
Within the framework of the second stage, 5 modern plants are being built at the expense of foreign direct investment totaling $625 million.
The projects will be implemented in cooperation with large companies of the People's Republic of China and the Republic of Korea. The new plants will cover the Republic of Karakalpakstan and the Bukhara, Jizzakh, Navoi, Syrdarya, Surkhandarya, and Khorezm regions.
Once these projects reach full capacity:
- 1.9 million tons of solid household waste will be heat-treated annually based on modern environmental requirements;
- 635 million kWh of electricity will be generated;
- 158 million cubic meters of natural gas will be saved;
- Greenhouse gas emissions will be reduced by 316 thousand tons;
- 500 new jobs will be created.
Earlier, in the first stage of the projects, the construction of 6 plants was started by 3 large Chinese companies at the expense of foreign direct investment in the amount of $933 million.
The projects of the first stage cover the Namangan, Fergana, Kashkadarya, Samarkand, Andijan and Tashkent regions, as well as the city of Tashkent.
Thus, an integrated system for generating electricity from waste in all regions of the republic will be created through 11 investment projects with a total value of 1 billion 558 million US dollars within the framework of two stages.
The phased commissioning of all plants is planned for 2027–2028. Once the projects reach full capacity, a total of:
- thermal processing of 5.4 million tons of solid household waste per year;
- 2.2 billion kWh of electricity will be generated annually;
- 1,500 new jobs will be created.
Electricity generated at plants in accordance with agreements on the purchase of electricity and the supply of solid household waste
It is guaranteed to be purchased by Uzenergosotish JSC for 30 years. This will ensure the long-term and stable operation of the projects.
Modern technologies are being implemented at plants to limit the release of harmful substances into the atmosphere resulting from the incineration of waste. This will improve the environmental situation in the regions and significantly reduce the volume of waste disposal at landfills.
Most importantly, these projects are important because they form a new system based not only on the disposal of waste but also on its conversion into alternative energy and economic resources.
