During the meeting, particular attention was paid to protecting the health and lives of the population, as well as the environment, from the harmful effects of radioactive waste. The draft law provides for improving the procedures for the storage, transportation, and management of radioactive waste, as well as establishing a unified state policy in this area.
Faction member F. Sharipov noted that the draft proposes amendments to certain existing laws; however, the necessity for these amendments has not been sufficiently substantiated.
The initiators, in turn, emphasized the need to ensure the safe handling, storage, and management of radioactive waste through the use of modern technologies amid the development of nuclear energy.
The issue of training personnel for the nuclear energy sector was also discussed at the meeting. It was noted that systematic work in this area has been carried out since 2018. The opening of a branch of the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology in Uzbekistan was highlighted as one of the important steps toward training qualified specialists for the sector.
Special attention was also paid to the storage of radioactive waste. According to specialists, the existing radioactive waste storage center is primarily intended for waste generated by medical institutions and industrial enterprises. Facilities for the storage and management of waste generated by nuclear power plants are to be incorporated directly into the design of the respective plants.
If adopted, the draft law will further improve state control in the areas of radiation and nuclear safety, the use of atomic energy, and the management of radioactive waste.
The meeting also considered another draft law concerning the procedures for imposing financial penalties, appealing such penalties, and refunding unlawfully collected funds.
Following the discussions, the faction adopted the relevant decisions on the issues included in the agenda.
