During the meeting, the parties discussed cooperation in the areas of waste management and the digitalization of environmental monitoring in Uzbekistan. The initiative to establish the Basel Convention Regional Centre for Central Asia in Uzbekistan was also among the key topics of discussion. In this regard, special attention was paid to developing data exchange systems on hazardous waste and chemicals, as well as using modern digital tools to monitor transboundary waste flows.
The parties also discussed prospects for monitoring territories through satellite observation, geographic information systems — GIS, and remote sensing technologies. In addition, a proposal was put forward to train local specialists in the use of modern technologies. The importance of an environmental situation centre for real-time monitoring of key indicators was also emphasized during the meeting.
The parties noted the importance of effectively using the advanced experience of UNEP/GRID-Geneva to modernize Uzbekistan’s waste management system, strengthen environmental monitoring and develop regional environmental cooperation.
