Recently, at approximately 1:30 a.m., a spontaneous fire occurred at the municipal solid waste landfill located within the territory of the “Iftixor” Citizens’ Assembly in Yangiyul District, Tashkent Region.
Following the incident, the Tashkent Regional Division of the State Institution “Waste Landfill Management Directorate” under the Waste Management Agency promptly implemented emergency response measures.
To extinguish the fire and mitigate its potential adverse effects, specialized equipment was deployed, including one bulldozer, two high-capacity water pumps, and two dump trucks. As a result of the coordinated response efforts, the fire was completely extinguished.
Currently, routine landfill operations, including waste leveling and compaction works, are being carried out on a daily basis.
It should be noted that one of the probable causes of the fire was the high ambient temperature. During hot weather conditions, broken glass fragments present at the landfill may act as magnifying lenses, concentrating sunlight and heating dry vegetation, branches, and polyethylene materials, which can lead to smoldering and eventually result in a fire.
For reference:
The landfill was established in 2017 and covers a total area of 37.5 hectares. The nearest residential area is located approximately 1–1.5 kilometers away, while the farthest section of the landfill is situated 5–6 kilometers from populated areas. The highest point of the landfill rises approximately 40–45 meters above ground level, while the lowest section ranges from 5–10 meters in height. On average, the landfill receives between 1,000 and 1,100 tons of waste per day.
