According to a resolution of the United Nations General Assembly, March 30 is declared worldwide as the “International Day of Zero Waste” (“World Zero-Waste Day”). In our country, this date has been actively observed every year since 2018 at the initiative of the head of state.
In particular, today, March 30, the Waste Management and Circular Economy Development Agency under the Committee for Ecology organized another large-scale environmental plogging campaign in the “Kyzyl Tog” area of Parkent district, Tashkent region. The event was conducted on a wide scale in cooperation with the Youth Affairs Agency and Coca-Cola Uzbekistan.
The environmental campaign was launched simultaneously in the Republic of Karakalpakstan, the city of Tashkent, and all regions, continuing in an active format. About 500 participants took part in the events, including employees of the committee and the agency, industry representatives, schoolchildren, youth, media representatives, and the general public.
Speaking at the event, the agency’s director, Sharifbek Khasanov, emphasized the importance of drawing public attention to environmental cleanup and promoting this direction.
“Waste pollution is becoming one of the pressing problems worldwide today. According to forecasts, by 2050 the volume of waste may reach 308 billion tons. Therefore, serious attention must be paid to environmental cleanup and waste recycling. The goal of today’s campaign is not only to clean the selected area but also to raise public awareness about the unacceptability of dumping waste in unauthorized places, to increase environmental culture, and to promote environmental cleanliness,” he noted.
In addition, representatives of partner organizations emphasized that choosing densely populated areas for plogging is an effective solution. Despite the presence of several waste containers, people often leave plastic bottles, paper, and other waste in inappropriate places. It was noted that such campaigns help foster a more responsible attitude toward the environment among residents and visitors.
During the campaign, the “Kyzyl Tog” area was cleared of 1 ton and 754 kg of waste. According to the results, the “Toza hudud” team took 1st place (195 kg), the “Maxsus poligon” team took 2nd place (130 kg), and the “Billing” team took 3rd place (106 kg). The teams that collected the most waste were awarded, and all participants received commemorative gifts and certificates of appreciation.
For reference: within the framework of the campaign, more than 2,000 participants across the republic cleaned about 20 areas, removing 97 tons and 900 kg of waste, which were transported and disposed of using 40 units of special equipment.
We remind that the Agency annually conducts environmental initiatives such as “World Cleanup Day,” “Let’s Make the Mahalla a Waste-Free Area,” “Actual Cleanliness Days,” as well as the “Cleanliness and Improvement Month.”
