As part of the nationwide “Green Space” project, green areas are being created in all mahallas across the republic. In particular, “Sayqal” mahalla in the city of Samarkand, Samarkand region, is being transformed into a “green” mahalla, while the sidewalks used by residents are being turned into shaded walking streets.
For reference, the nationwide “Green Space” project has been implemented in Uzbekistan on the initiative of the President since 2021. As part of the project, to date, at least 200 million fruit and ornamental tree and shrub seedlings have been planted every year during the spring and autumn seasons. In addition, according to the Presidential Decree “On the State Program for the Implementation of the Strategy ‘Uzbekistan–2030’ in the Year of Environmental Protection and the ‘Green Economy’”, it has been determined to create a network of “Shaded Walking Streets” along the main sidewalks used by the population in our country. This will reduce air pollution by 5–10 percent and lower the air temperature along sidewalks by 3–5 degrees. It will also increase physical activity among the population and create opportunities for maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
In the territory of “Sayqal” mahalla, 550 trees and shrub seedlings will be planted, and an area of 700 meters will be landscaped. As a result, cooler conditions will be provided during hot weather: the ground surface temperature will decrease from +43°C to +35°C, while the asphalt surface temperature will decrease from +48°C to +39°C.
It should be noted that the 3-30-300 principle is being followed to increase the level of greenery in urban areas. Under this principle, every person should be able to see at least 3 large trees from the window of their home. This has a positive effect on people’s psychological well-being, reduces stress, and helps improve concentration. In addition, at least 30 percent of each mahalla (or district territory) should be covered by trees. This is the minimum amount needed to reduce extreme heat in cities (the urban heat island effect), clean the air, and provide shade.
Furthermore, every household should be located no more than 300 meters from the nearest park, public garden, or green area. This is approximately a 5-minute walk. Such proximity encourages people to engage in active physical movement, walk in the fresh air, and interact socially. Today, the 3-30-300 principle is widely used around the world in planning many advanced cities and developing environmental strategies.
The work being carried out within the framework of the nationwide “Green Space” project contributes to achieving goals such as increasing the level of greenery across the republic and mitigating the consequences of climate change more quickly.
