In his keynote speech, Professor Jeffrey Sachs addressed the pressing global challenges in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Uzbekistan’s efforts in this regard, and the importance of regional monitoring systems. He positively assessed Uzbekistan’s progress toward the SDGs and emphasized the need to further strengthen international cooperation.
The event also featured the participation of Deputy Minister of Economy and Finance Umid Abidkhadjaev, Deputy Director of AFD Antoin Chevalier, UN Resident Coordinator in Uzbekistan Sabin Mahl, as well as representatives from government agencies, academia, and international organizations.
During the seminar, participants received detailed information on the essence of the SDGs and Uzbekistan’s recent achievements. In particular, Uzbekistan currently ranks 62nd globally in the overall SDG Index, with an average score of 73.1 points. This figure is higher than the regional average (72.0) and reflects an increase of +12.1 points since 2015.
The event also included discussions on cooperation in the development of SDG monitoring platforms, the introduction of geospatial data and modern statistical tools, food security, and sustainable land use.
A key outcome of the event was the signing of a cooperation memorandum between Professor Sachs, the French Development Agency, and the Ministry of Economy and Finance to launch a joint project aimed at implementing regional-level monitoring of the Sustainable Development Goals.
The Ministry of Economy and Finance of the Republic of Uzbekistan regards this partnership as an important step toward the country’s sustainable and inclusive development and expresses its readiness to further expand international cooperation in this area.
